Lucknow lashed by another sharp spell of rain, waterlogging hits key stretches

A fresh spell of heavy rain brought parts of Lucknow to a standstill, with waterlogging disrupting traffic and poor turnout

In a repeat of Friday evening’s downpour, Lucknow was lashed by a sharp spell of rain around 6.30pm on Sunday, with some parts recording over 50 mm. Chinhat received 51.5 mm and Sitapur Road 51 mm as the nearly 45-minute spell left several key roads and residential stretches waterlogged.

Downpour floods key roads, residential areas

Although the Amausi observatory recorded no significant rainfall, moderate to heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms was reported from several parts of the city and northern Lucknow.

Kakori Development Block recorded 46.5 mm, Sadar Tehsil 41.5 mm, Raj Bhavan 23 mm and 1090 Gomti Nagar 22.5 mm, said Atul Kumar Singh, senior scientist at the Lucknow met office.

The downpour came two days after the Amausi observatory recorded 56.4 mm between 5.30pm and 8.30pm on Friday, taking the total rainfall from 8.30am to 8.30pm to 58.7 mm.

Waterlogging slows traffic across Gomti Nagar, central Lucknow

Waterlogging was reported from Polytechnic crossing to KGMU crossing, with Park Road near Shyama Prasad Mukherjee (Civil) Hospital among the worst affected. People were seen wading through knee-deep water.

In Gomti Nagar, Vinay Khand and Vivek Khand were inundated within an hour. Traffic backed up between Indira Gandhi Pratisthan and the PICUP building, while Lohia Path and Gokhale Marg also witnessed water accumulation.

“At Vibuti Khand, the waterlogging scene was quite alarming. Traffic was moving at a snail’s pace, with water touching the bumper. I was scared that rainwater might enter the silencer,” said Gaurav, who works with a software company.

More rain likely as IMD issues alerts for parts of UP

The weather office has forecast generally cloudy skies in Lucknow on Monday, with one or two spells of rain or thundershowers. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to remain around 34°C and 26°C.

Rain or thundershowers are likely at a few places in west UP and many places in east UP. Isolated heavy rain is expected in east UP, while rainfall activity in western districts is likely to decline.

For Monday, the IMD has issued an orange alert for Prayagraj, Sonbhadra, Mirzapur and Chandauli for very heavy rain at isolated places.

A yellow alert covers Banda, Chitrakoot, Kaushambi, Fatehpur, Varanasi, Sant Ravidas Nagar, Jaunpur, Hamirpur, Mahoba, Jhansi and Lalitpur for heavy rain.
