CAT 2008: Dwarka institute pulls an ace

At least 21 students of Netaji Subhash Institute of Technology (NSIT), Dwarka, cleared the Common Admission Test (CAT) 2008 and got calls from the prestigious IIMs and other leading management institutes. The results were announced on Friday.

One of the highest scorers was also from the same institute. Final-year student Debanjan Dey was on cloud nine after scoring 246/360.

“I am very happy because I have scored 100 percentile and got calls from all the IIMs except for IIM Shillong,” said Dey, a resident of CR Park in the Capital.

“But I am keeping my fingers crossed because many of the IIMs look at work experience and past academic records before offering a seat,” said Dey.

He added that students and alumni from his institute had done exceedingly well. “As of now we know of at least 21 people who have got calls. The number might increase,” he said.

The total number of students clearing CAT at IIT Delhi stood between 15 and 20, although neither students nor teachers could confirm the data. Experts, however, said the trend pointed at the IIMs picking up applicants with work experience.

“For instance, when I compare the data of IIM Lucknow, the 2006-08 batch has 65 per cent applicants with work experience. In comparison, the 2008-10 batch had 89 per cent applicants with work experience,” said Vairagkar.

He added that on an average, close to 800 applicants from Delhi get calls from the IIMs.

About 2.3 lakh B-school aspirants appeared for CAT on November 18 last year, including 35,000 students from Delhi region. Nearly 5,000 students will get admission to the seven IIMs, including IIM Shillong, which will start functioning from the coming academic session.

Selected candidates will be called for group discussions and interviews by the respective IIMs, each of which has a different selection criterion such as CAT scores, work experience and past academic records.
