CBI chargesheets 9 in kidney racket case

The CBI has filed a chargesheet against nine persons, including alleged kingpin Amit Kumar, in the multi-crore kidney racket case, reports Tushar Srivastava.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has chargesheeted nine persons in the multi-crore-kidney racket case. These include Amit Kumar, the alleged kingpin of the racket, who had fled to Nepal and was arrested from there.

Moradabad Police had blown the lid off the racket when they raided a house in Gurgaon in January. A state-of-the-art hospital was being illegally run from the premises and patients from various countries would come for transplants.

The case was transferred to the CBI in February. The agency’s investigations have confirmed that Kumar, who has a degree in Ayurvedic medicines (BAMS), conducted the transplants himself. A team of doctors, anesthists and assistants assisted him. The agency also has evidence that Kumar carried between 250-300 transplants. However, officials said the number of illegal transplants was much more and are still trying to dig out more evidence. Senior officials said investigations did not point to links of any senior bureaucrat or politician to the racket.
