The Government on Wednesday said the CBI had requested the Interpol to withdraw the Red Corner Notice against Italian Businessman Ottavio Quattrocchi on the grounds that non-bailable warrant issued by a Delhi Court was no longer valid.
"The Red Corner Notice against Ottavio Quattrocchi was issued on the basis of the non-bailable warrant for arrest issued against him by the Special Judge, Delhi on February 6, 1997.... For offences under the IPC and the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1947," Minister of state for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions Prithviraj Chavan informed Lok Sabha.
He said CBI, after obtaining the opinion of Attorney General of India, requested the withdrawal of the Red Corner notice on the grounds that non-bailable warrant which became basis of the notice was no longer valid and attempts to extradite him from Malaysia as well as Argentina have failed.
"On the request of the CBI, the Interpol has revoked the Red Corner Notice against Ottavio Quattrocchi on November 25, 2008," Chavan said.
"The request for the issue of a Red Corner Notice is received by the Interpol Wing of the CBI from the concerned investigating agency, which then forwards it to Interpol General Secretariat, Lyon, France. Similarly, the requesting investigating agency can only take a decision for the withdrawal of the Red Corner Notice," he said.
