Chief information commissioner Satyananda Mishra has asked the Central Bureau of Investigation to provide information on cases related to corruption after examining them under the exemption clauses of the RTI Act.

The government had exempted CBI from the RTI Act last year on the ground that it handled sensitive information but the decision was being used by the agency to deny information on allegations of corruption against the agency officials.

The exemption did not pertain to providing information on allegations of corruption and against human right violations.

In a case related to RTI application filed by activist CJ Karira, CBI argued before the commission that the agency by large probed cases related to allegations of corruption and disclosing such information would make the exemption given to it 'totally infructuous.'

The agency, which is probing number of high profile corruption cases such as 2G scam, NRHM scam, Illegal ore mining, CWG scam, Tatra BEML scam besides other such cases pleaded that disclosure of information would defy the objective of keeping it in the exemption list.
