With teachers under tremendous pressure to boost the scores of students taking the Boards, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has decided to conduct a training session for them on setting quality question paper for the Board exams.
“The question papers will be student-friendly. Our aim is to make students understand the question papers in a better way. Rather than merely assessing their knowledge such question papers will concentrate on what should have been asked from them,” said CBSE chairman Vineet Joshi.
He added that the system of Board exams should test the overall skills of the students.
“Usually students mug up lessons to score well in exams. Rote learning may hamper their growth at higher level of learning. Candidates should be assessed at all levels such as intelligence, analysis, reasoning, writing and presentation. I feel that a good mix of every aspect will help students in holistic development,” said Laakshi Bhatia, a Class 11 student in Apeejay School, Pitampura.
Since 2008, 20% of the question papers in the Board exams consist of Higher Order Thinking Skills (Hots) that test the analytical and critical skills of the students.
“To create a balance in test papers, teachers who frame the question papers will be imparted training on making question papers that will test what it should test,” said Joshi.
“The training can also help us in teaching and preparing students in a holistic manner. Such question papers will test what students have learnt rather than what they should have learnt. It will be a trendsetter if implemented in the right way because it will provide an interface to teachers and students to know how questions should be framed based on their learning and understanding instead of emphasising on set curriculum and previous years’ question papers,” said Snehlata Gupta, who teaches English at Rajkiya Pratibha Vikas Vidyalaya, Surajmal Vihar.
