After filing an FIR against unknown police personnel for using excessive force during the midnight crackdown on Baba Ramdev’s supporters at Ramlila Ground in June last year, the Delhi Police have started identifying them through CCTV and video footage. Police said the guilty policemen would be arrested.
“We have asked for a list of Delhi Police and Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel who were present there that night. We have to identify the culprits through media and CCTV footage. Those who had indulged in stone-pelting and lathicharge will be arrested,” said a senior police officer.
Police sources said personnel who had dragged supporters out of ground might escape punishment as they were clearing the crowd.
“They were helping the supporters, so action will be taken only against those who resorted to lathicharge or pelted stones,” the officer added.
Delhi Police said they had been asked by the Supreme Court to investigate the role of officers who had indulged in brick-batting, which endangered human life and led to destruction of public property.
“We already have the footage. But now we will scan it to investigate the role of police personnel. Those caught, will be confronted with the footage,” the officer added. Most senior officers who were present at the time of crackdown have been transferred. Though Delhi police commissioner was himself present, joint commissioner, deputy commissioner and even SHO of that time have been transferred.
