CCTV, security: Promises never met

In the wake of the sexual assault of a minor girl in a north corporation school in Mangolpuri, leaders of the civic body reiterated the promises made by their predecessors in the unified MCD.

“This year, we will surely install CCTVs. The budget has already been passed and we have asked officials to expedite the process,” said Mahender Nagpal, leader of the House, north corporation.

Standing committee chairman Yogendra Chandolia said he had written to commissioner PK Gupta for installing CCTV cameras in all schools run by the civic body around eight months ago. Even the unified MCD used to announce measures such as security guards, CCTVs and even higher boundary walls in school during every annual budget.

After its was split into three units, the separate civic bodies failed to install any promised measure at any of the 1,639 schools that came under the MCD’s jurisdiction. Most of the schools are co-ed and have lakhs of girl students in them.

Additional commissioner (education) Deepak Hastir said that the police were probing the case and the civic body was extending all possible help to the police.
