“The home ministry does not expect any problem since there is recognition that the party that loses the suit can appeal against the decision before the Supreme Court. But all precautionary measures have been taken to meet any eventuality,” a senior government official said.

Home Minister P. Chidambaram, who was expected to travel to his constituency, has also decided to stay back in Delhi. On Monday, Home Secretary G.K. Pillai reviewed the contingency plans. The home ministry has asked all states, particularly Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Karnataka, to give “top most priority” to beefing up security.

It has identified 32 sensitive locations where there is a potential to “evoke sharp reactions” and asked states to be alert.

The Centre will provide 5,200 armed guard, including Rapid Action Force, to UP — a decision the state government termed as “insufficient”.

Congress general secretary Digvijaya Singh on Monday said the party made a mistake in 1992 by trusting the right-wing parties. “I cannot trust BJP, RSS, VHP. In 1992, we made a mistake when we accepted their affidavit. I have come to know that they are making preparations and they could do anything,” he said.
