However, the Opposition BJP suggested the Congress was playing politics on a sports issue.

Law Minister Veerappa Moily told reporters, “This is a matter between an individual and the BCCI. The government has nothing to do with it.”

BJP spokesman Ravi Shankar Prasad: “Lifting the ban on Azharuddin is not a national issue. The BCCI should take an objective decision without being influenced by political pressure just because he is an MP.”

BCCI officials played it safe. “What can the board do? The matter is in the court,” said BCCI secretary N Srinivasan.
