Chill going nowhere

The maximum temperature was recorded at 12.7 degrees Celsius, making Tuesday the coldest day of the winter season so far. The maximum temperature was 8 degrees below normal. What's worse is that the icy chill is here to stay for at least a couple of more days.

"The northerly winds from the Himalayan region are responsible for the current weather conditions in the city. The minimum and maximum temperatures are expected to go down further on Wednesday," said BP Yadav, director, weather forecast, India Meteorological Department.

The minimum temperature dipped sharply from Monday's 8.2 degrees. This dip is attributed to clear skies on Monday night. Before Monday, a thin layer of clouds was appearing at night, keeping the minimum temperature above the normal range. According to Yadav, Delhi and most of central India is in the grip of the first cold wave of this winter season. "Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Orissa and Jharkhand have recorded very low temperatures during the last couple of days," he said.

Tuesday morning in Delhi was foggy but it cleared in a couple of hours. The skies remained overcast till afternoon, with the sun playing hide and seek all morning. The Met Department has predicted a maximum temperature of 13 degrees and a minimum temperature of 3 degrees for Wednesday. The sky is expected to remain clear throughout the day.
