Though the railways can’t do anything about the long delays in the arrival and departure timings of the trains due to dense fog, it has made sure that passengers don’t suffer in the open.

New waiting and retiring rooms have been constructed at New Delhi and Hazrat Nizammudin railway stations and the capacity of existing ones have also been increased.

However, the number of waiting rooms is still not adequate, looking at the footfall at these stations. The New Delhi station receives a daily footfall of more than 4.5 lakh people, while the number is more than three lakh for Hazrat Nizammudin station.

“From the existing capacity of accommodating 2,500 passengers in the waiting rooms, we have increased the capacity to 5,000 to 5,500 passengers. New waiting rooms have been built at the Ajmeri gate side. The capacity has been increased on the Paharganj side of the New Delhi station as well,” said SK Sharma, chief PRO, northern railways.

“The capacity of waiting and retiring rooms at Hazrat Nizammudin station has been increased to 4,000-4,500 from the existing capacity of 2,000. New rooms have come up at the station,” added Sharma.

Other facilities such as power points to charge laptops and mobile phones are also being upgraded in the waiting rooms. New washing pits and parking areas have also come up at Hazrat Nizammudin station.

“People often face difficulty in charging their phones and laptops at railway stations. We have increased the number of points in waiting rooms. So while passengers wait for their trains, batteries of their mobile phones and laptops won’t drain out,” added a railway officer.

Food is also available round the clock inside the station.
