Civic bodies seek to control parking lots

The city's municipal bodies plan to demand an amendment to the DMC Act, which will give them sole control over parking sites in the Capital -- except those under NDMC and Delhi Metro. Ritam Halder reports. Parkings

The city's municipal bodies plan to demand an amendment to the DMC Act, which will give them sole control over parking sites in the Capital -- except those under NDMC and Delhi Metro.

Currently, several authorities run parking sites in Delhi. These include the DDA, Railways, CPWD and PWD. According to civic officials, the move will help rationalisation of parking charges in the city as well as better enforcement of parking rules.

The DMC Act can be amended only the Delhi government.

"Sections 303 and 304 of the DMC Act will have to be revised for giving civic bodies sole ownership of parking sites. The amendment proposal is being prepared and will be moved soon," said an official of the South Delhi corporation, requesting anonymity.

The South Delhi Municipal Corporation has 73 parking sites under its jurisdiction. According to officials, SDMC is claiming 13 more sites that are presently under the control of DDA. The civic body also has two nearly-ready multi-level parkings and another six which are under construction. The North Delhi Municipal Corporation has 116 parking sites, of which 62 were tendered a few months ago. Another 25 more sites have been identified and sent for traffic clearance. The north body also has four multi-level parking sites. The East civic body has 30 sites with 45 under construction and eight more in planning stages.

The NDMC has 54 sites under its jurisdiction while the DMRC operates around a 100 parking lots in the capital.
