Civic body starts work on Jama Masjid revamp

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has begun the first phase of redevelopment work around the mosque precinct, including cleaning up the area and putting up boards depicting how the area will look after the makeover, reports HT Correspondent.

On paper for long, the Jama Masjid redevelopment plan has finally taken off.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has begun the first phase of redevelopment work around the mosque precinct, including cleaning up the area and putting up boards depicting how the area will look after the makeover.

The civic agency had accepted last month that the Rs 1,200-crore plan would miss its initial Commonwealth Games deadline.

According to the MCD, it has now also started work on the supplementary plan of decongesting neighbouring areas, such as Subhash Marg and the area between Jama Masjid and Parade Ground, that was cleared by the Unified Traffic and Transportation Infrastructure Planning and Engineering Centre in December last year.

The MCD is removing all encroachments in the area to implement the decongestion plan. The proposal to redevelop the Jama Masjid precinct was cleared by the MCD’s high-powered standing committee in September 2009, four years after its inception.

The plan had been waiting for approval from various civic and heritage bodies for several years.
