Identified as 17-year-old Sumit Kumar, a resident of the Kanjhawala area, the scuffle between the victim and the accused trio was apparently triggered by his interference in a quarrel that his younger brother had with two of the juveniles on April 10.

“All those involved in the incident are students of a local government school. On Wednesday afternoon, Sumit’s brother had an altercation with the two juveniles, students of class 6 and 7, respectively,” said an officer.

When Sumit got wind of the fight his brother had with the juvenile duo, he intervened on his sibling’s behalf and attempted to sort it out.

On Friday evening, two whole days after the incident and what they apparently thought was a negotiation they had been forced into by Sumit, they waylaid him near his house and started assaulting him.

“They were accompanied by one of their associates, a 19-year-old who is yet to be identified and is currently on the run, and beat the victim up mercilessly,” the officer said.

Locals informed the police about an inert Sumit lying on the roadside. He was rushed to Sanjay Gandhi Hospital where he died of internal injuries.

A case of murder was registered at the Kanjhawala police station and, based on the testimony of his younger brother, the two juveniles involved in the incident were apprehended and detained from their respective homes.

“We are now looking for their absconding associate who will be nabbed soon,” the officer added.
