India Inc's praise of him as a prime ministerial material at the Vibrant Gujarat global investors summit may have sparked a debate that Narendra Modi is trying to eclipse L.K. Advani as BJP’s nominee for the top post. But more significant was his level of confidence as a politician-manager that was on display.

Undeterred by a galaxy of captains of industry, Modi chose to offer them tips on how to survive the meltdown. As Ratan Tata, Mukesh Ambani and others heard him, Modi went beyond Advani’s emphasis on “good governance” to talk of “proactive governance.”
Everyone, including the governments, must visualise in advance what would happen a few years from now, he said. “Even in recession, I see an opportunity. That’s way the Gujaratis for centuries have looked at their problems,” he said.
Modi wanted industries to focus on three things to capture global market. “Make zero-defect globally acceptable products, two, ensure they are made the green way and, last, employ modern marketing techniques to reach them.” A delegate said, “You need some guts to tell top captains on what to do.”
