An underground CNG pipeline burst outside the boundary wall of the Imperial Hotel in Janpath on early Thursday. No one was injured in the accident.

The fire department had received a call around 1:32 a.m. The police said the guards outside the hotel heard a blast from the pipeline and immediately called the Police Control Room.

Officials said 10 fire tenders were sent to the spot and it took around an hour to douse the flames.

“Had the fire not been controlled in time, it could have spread to the hotel as well. It took us over an hour to douse the flames,” said a senior fire official.

Officials said the underground CNG pipeline was possibly linked to the petrol pump next to the Imperial Hotel.

“We believe that there was sudden leakage in the underground pipeline which might have triggered the fire,” added the official.

“The blaze could have affected all these nearby areas. Thankfully the fire started at night. During daytime there could had been casualties, as the area remains crowded during the day,” added the official.

Further investigations in the case are on.
