Raghubir Nagar, which saw 16 hooch deaths in the last fortnight, falls in West Delhi parliamentary constituency. Both the Congress and BJP candidates did their bit to score some brownie points on the matter on Monday. BJP candidate Jagdish Mukhi too said once he became “the MP of this area, it would take minutes to wipe out this problem”.

Police faced flak from all sides. Apart from residents of Raghubir Nagar who were out on the streets protesting against them, both Mukhi and Mishra blamed them of inaction.

Mukhi said though it was known that the Sansi tribe was involved, no action was being taken against them. “The tribe is involved in this, (but) the police never takes actions against them,” he said.

The Delhi government too asked Delhi Police to expedite investigation in the Raghubir Nagar case. The government has also advised people to purchase liquor only from the authorised vends.

Delhi Finance Minister AK Walia asked the Excise Department to increase number of samples being tested and ensure that every batch is checked before they are supplied to vends. The Deputy Commissioner (Revenue), South West District, would submit a report on the Dabri case in two days.

Walia said the city government has also requested the Centre to give its consent to the new Excise Bill of Delhi, which provides for stringent action for sale of spurious liquour.
