Questioning BSP chief Mayawati's proposal to split Uttar Pradesh into four states, the Congress on Friday said it favoured constitution of the second States Reorganisation Commission (SRC) to address similar demands from other parts of the country.

But the party sought to de-link the setting of SRC with Telangana, saying it was an old issue that needs to be viewed separately.

Congress spokesman Rashid Alvi said an attempt was being made to make a political issue out it. The party had favoured setting up the second SRC before 2004 Lok Sabha polls so that it can review such demands.
