Police said that though the trio from Nagaland were allowed to proceed, they returned with butcher knives in 15 minutes and attacked the constable, Daleep Kumar, at the picket.

"Around 3am, three persons came to the picket with butcher knives. One of them put the knife at the neck of the constable and threatened to kill him. Another person tried to stab the constable in the stomach but he managed to shield himself using his right hand. This caused deep cuts on his finger and he started bleeding," a police officer said.

The trio then tried to pull the trigger of Kumar's rifle. Another constable, Shahjad Ahmed, then ran to the nearest police van and returned with colleagues. The men were overpowered

Kumar was discharged after preliminary treatment. "I did not expect them to return and attack me. When I first saw them with knives, I thought they were coming to take help from us. But suddenly one of them put the knife to my neck and the others tried to snatch my rifle," Kumar said. Mezu Solo, the owner of a plywood factory in Nagaland, his son Justin Solo and Set Sari, Mezu's nephew, have been arrested.
