Cops assure labourers they can stay on

lakhs of labourers who do not have a valid Delhi identification proof and police verification have allegedly been told by the police to leave the city. HT reports.

Ashish Baruah (34) and his family won’t have to spend their Durga Puja back home in Purulia. Baruah heaved a sigh of relief on Monday when the police came and assured him that he could stay on in the city.

Residents of Masoodpur slum along with lakhs of migrant labourers across of the city were living in fear of being shooed away during the Games. He and lakhs of other labourers who do not have a valid Delhi identification proof and police verification were allegedly told by the police to leave the city.

"After the police came to our area, I was scared and decided to leave with my family. But now police have assured us that as I have been living here for the last five years they will help me get a Delhi identification," he added.

The RWAs, the ones who initially came to know of the migrant labourers’ exodus have also heaved a sigh relief. "When our domestic help told us she might have to leave the city for the Games I was shocked. It was highly undemocratic. If our help would had left for a month then we would had to leave work and sit at home," said Angela Nar, member C2 Vasant Kunj RWA.
