Four years after Gurgaon police busted a gang of laptop thieves and recovered 14 computers, officials nabbed two men on Thursday who allegedly specialise in the con art. The duo are hardcore criminals and belong to a tribe from Tamil Nadu.
They used a gulel (a catapult) to smash glasses in order to reach the laptop.
In action since 2006, the gang has stolen close to 500 laptops. These criminals have forced Gurgaon police to form a dedicated “anti-laptop robbery squad” consisting of young and computer-savvy policemen in 2009. However, the results have not been heartening.
It was on Thursday when locals caught two thieves who were trying to flee after snatching a laptop from a biker in Kapashera.
They were identified as Murgesh and Suraj who have confessed to have stolen five laptops from Gurgaon and Delhi. In November 2006, Gurgaon police recovered 14 stolen laptops from a Delhi-based three-member gang of thieves.
While commenting upon their modus operandi, Murari said that one of them would first make rounds of parking lots and spot cars with laptop bags.
“The other one would then target the car and break the window panes with a gulel (by throwing a stone using rubber string). They would first wait for anyone to notice the broken glass and then move to pick up the bag if none noticed,” Krishan Murari, ACP (south), Gurgaon police, said.
