Courteous cops by 2010 Games

The Commonwealth Games 2010 might just bring about a change in the attitude of traffic policemen as well, reports Nivedita Khandekar.

Remember your encounter with the traffic policeman who told you nonchalantly, “Yaha parking nahi hai … chalan to katega saab”. You wished he had told you so in a polite way. Or for that matter the neighbourhood cop yelling at a person to go ahead and complain to higher authorities, “Jao jo kar sakte ho karlo”.

Well, apart from many other things, the Commonwealth Games 2010 might just bring about a change in the attitude of traffic policemen as well. Delhi police has envisaged a Special Training Programme for ingraining ‘courtesy’ and ‘politeness’ in police personnel while discharging of their duties during the Commonwealth Games.

The Organising Committee (OC), Commonwealth Games 2010, has projected a requirement of 25,000 volunteers, and the Delhi Police would be utilising the services of more than 8,500 for traffic regulation, management of pedestrian flow at and around the venues, parking assistance, queue formations, etc.

The Delhi Traffic Police will organise training programmes for personnel working at key locations in association with Delhi Tourism and ITDC. They are also planning to train relevant stakeholders such as drivers of auto rickshaws, taxis and buses.

“However, all this is in planning stage now. The actual training will be held only in 2010, a few months prior to the Games,” the official added.

All this and much more are part of arrangements that are being made to educate people for maintaining discipline and orderly behaviour with foreigners when they come for Commonwealth Games 2010.

The Games Organising Committee has constituted a committee that will select and train a team of volunteers to be posted at various venues/locations.
