The CPI(M) on Thursday demanded an amendment in the Constitution to make it mandatory for Parliament to function at least 100 days in a year.

Senior CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury said it was important to make the government “accountable to the people”.
Yechury said situations such as the issuance of an ordinance on sugarcane pricing and attempts by the government to drop cases against controversial Italian businessman Ottavio Quattrocchi could have been avoided had the Parliament been in session.
“The government’s stand that there is no need to have more sittings of Parliament because there is no legislative business amounts to abdicating its constitutional responsibility. Besides making laws, Parliament raises issues of public importance,” Yechury said.
The CPI(M) would raise the demand in both Houses of Parliament, he said.
