DAVP calendar reflects green concern

The 2011 calendar brought out by the Directorate of Advertising and Visual Publicity (DAVP), with the theme India's Endangered Species, was released by information and broadcasting minister Ambika Soni on Friday.

"The calendar has been inspired by the idea of sensitising people on the impact of environment and climate change on matters concerning endangered species in the country," Soni said.

This unique calendar will be sent to all panchayats in the country besides all eco-clubs in schools funded by the environment ministry and those sponsored under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan and Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan. Twelve lakh calendars are being printed for distribution.

The endangered species include the tiger, Asiatic lion, vulture, Indian elephant, Indian one-horned rhino, swamp deer or Barahsingha, black-necked Crane, western tragopan or western horned tragopan, snow leopard, Olive Ridley Turtle, golden langoor and red panda.

Officials said the calendar was in tune with India's position on conservation of endangered animals.

"Our environment minister is presently in Cancun. This calendar could not have been more appropriately timed," she added.
