Delhi: 580 DTC buses remain off city roads

The inspection was organised after a bus had caught fire on Friday.

Though the transport department had promised to press into service older DTC buses, commuters faced a lot of problems.

“A number of our old DTC buses were operational to minimise inconvenience to the commuters. The situation will further improve on Tuesday,” said a senior Delhi government official.

DTC has a total of 1,093 buses, manufactured by Ashok Leyland. Of these, 513 were operational during the morning shift and 565 in the evening shift.

DTC has approximately 5,500 buses, of which 3,775 are low-floor while 1,700 are standard-floor buses.

According to official, the three-day inspection will be conducted by a joint team of DTC and Ashok Leyland officials.

The low-floor buses had developed snags in the recent past too. Sources said that in case faults are identified in the buses, they will be grounded.
