Delhi Government’s Department of Archaeology would soon issue a primary notification for 14 more heritage monuments, which will take the tally of monuments protected under the Delhi act to 20.

These 14 heritage monuments—Azam Khan’s tomb and Badi Lau Ka Gumbad to name two of them—are among 92 identified by the Department in the first phase of a project to conserve and protect them ahead of the Commonwealth Games 2010. They would be notified as “protected” under the Delhi Ancient and Historical Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act 2004 (enacted with effect from September 7, 2005).
“These are part of a comprehensive Memorandum of Understanding signed with the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH),” said Keshav Chandra, Director of the Dept of Archaeology.
“The MoU not just envisages conservation , but also ensures security at these monuments,” Chandra told HT.
The Department had signed the MoU with INTACH in October 2008 for conservation and protection of 92 monuments in the first phase before the 2010 Games. For each of these monuments, INTACH would conduct detailed documentation and survey.
