The capital is likely to get chillier ahead of Christmas with the Weatherman predicting minimum and maximum temperatures falling below average levels. The city has been experiencing chilly weather for the past couple of days.

The drop in temperature is due to the snowfall in upper parts of the country and cool winds blowing to the northern plains, the MeT Department said.

Today's minimum, which is one degree below normal for this time of the year, is the lowest for the season so far.

On Sunday, the minimum was 8.4 degree Celsius while Saturday's 7.7 degrees was the previous lowest for the season.

A thick layer of fog also engulfed the city skyline in the morning reducing the visibility to 500 metres. The flight movement was not affect due to fog.

The temperature in the city had been oscillating between eight and 25 degrees Celsius last week.

The Weatherman has predicted the possibility of the city being engulfed by shallow fog in the morning. The minimum and maximum temperature is likely to be around seven and 22 degree Celsius.

In 2008, the lowest minimum of the month was 6.4 degree Celsius recorded on December 26 while in 2007, it was 3.9 degrees on December 29. The record for 2006 was 7.3 degree Celsius on November 29.

The all-time record for minimum temperature was recorded on December 26 of 1945 when the mercury dipped to 1.1 degree Celsius.
