Delhi government has appointed National Institute for Smart Governance as a consultant for its project of bar-coding liquor bottles sold at its counters in order to curb sale of illicit liquor.

There are around 300 government-owned and 91 private counters in the city that are authorised to sell liquor.
Instead of bar-coding each bottle, the Excise Department has proposed to bar code each batch of cartons supplied to agencies like the Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (DSIDC), wholesale cooperative stores and the Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation (DTTDC).
NSIG is working in collaboration with the Information Technology (IT) department of Delhi Government to develop a software wherein the government will be able to trace each bottle, back to its carton, the official added.
The long-pending project of the government for bar-coding liquor bottles has been expedited in the wake of recent hooch tragedy in Dabri and Raghubeer Nagar when nearly 26 people died after consuming spurious liquor.
