Delhi govt asks Centre to block Uber, Ola apps

The Delhi government has warned app-based cab services such as Uber and Ola, functioning despite a ban, to halt operations with immediate effect or risk the denial of radio taxi licences. The government has also decided to approach the Centre to block the IP addresses of these mobile apps.

The Delhi government has warned app-based cab services such as Uber and Ola, functioning despite a ban, to halt operations with immediate effect or risk the denial of radio taxi licences. The government has also decided to approach the Centre to block the IP addresses of these mobile apps.

App-based cab services were banned in the Capital after a 25-year-old passenger was allegedly raped by a Uber driver in December 2014. However, both Uber and Ola are still in operation and have applied for radio taxi licences.

“We have noticed that despite a ban, they continue to run. We are writing to the information technology ministry as only they can ban the IP address, which will automatically ban the app,” said a transport department official.

The government has also written to these companies warning that their applications for fresh licences would be turned down if they do not halt operations. “We are not against such services as they are for the convenience of the public… All we want is for them to follow guidelines, get their drivers verified and install GPS tracking system,” the official added.

The companies have also been asked to provide the telephone number, email address and address proof of their registered office, call centre arrangement details, and feedback process.
