Delhi: Man sets estranged wife ablaze on road in full public view

A 25-year-old woman and mother of two was battling for life after being set on fire allegedly by her estranged husband in full public view in northeast Delhi’s Jyoti Nagar on Thursday evening.

A manhut has been launched to nab the accused who fled the crowded roundabout on the Delhi-Ghaziabad border immediately after the incident.

According to the police, Mohammad Raees, a native of Indrapuri near Loni in Ghaziabad, and Rubina had been married for six years but were separated for the last few months. On Thursday, Raees reportedly called Rubina several times at her mother’s home and asked her to return. She initially refused but relented later.

According to Sanjay Baniwal, joint CP (eastern range), Raees asked Rubina to meet him near the Loni roundabout.

The victim reached the rotary at around 4pm and reportedly found her husband waiting with a plastic bottle in hand. As per eyewitness accounts, the couple entered into an argument following which Raees poured kerosene from the bottle onto Rubina and, before she could react, threw a lighted match at her.

“The onlookers doused the flames while one of them called the police control room. Rubina was rushed to GTB hospital for immediate medical attention. The local sub-divisional magistrate reached the hospital and recorded her statement. The statements of a couple of eyewitnesses have also been registered,” said Baniwal.

A case under section 307 (attempt to murder) was registered at the Jyoti Nagar police station and a manhunt launched to nab Raees. One of the teams constituted for the hunt was sent to his hometown.
