A delegation led by Delhi mayor Rajni Abbi met home minister P Chidambaram on Saturday and insisted that splitting the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) would be an "erroneous move".

In the absence of natural boundaries, it would be difficult to define the jurisdiction of the proposed north, south and east municipal bodies, they said.

Only in east Delhi, river Yamuna could be roughly taken as a boundary, Abbi said.

The delegation, including deputy mayor Anil Kumar Sharma, leader of the house Subhash Arya, standing committee chairman Yogender Chandolia and former standing committee chairman Vijender Gupta, claimed that the draft for the split suggests the formation of a Directorate of Local Bodies which will have the right to issue any order to the three Corporations and monitor toll tax.

Calling it a clear violation of the Constitution, Abbi said that the trifurcation was not in the interest of nearly 1.67 crore Delhiites.

"Any such move would only lead to disturbance in providing timely and hassle-free civic services to them," the mayor added.

Abbi added that the MCD has been working on many projects, such as e-governance, roads and other infrastructure-related works, and they will face hurdles if the split happens.
