Delhi needs 15 more varsities

As per the National Knowledge Commission's recommendations to the Delhi Govt, the Capital should have at least 15 more universities. Amitabh Shukla reports.

The Capital should have at least 15 more universities, the National Knowledge Commission has recommended to the Delhi government. It also wants “knowledge hubs” or separate universities for specialised courses in the city.

A team of the advisory body, comprising panel chairman Sam Pitroda, Deepak Nayyar and S Regunathan, met Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Monday to discuss the recommendations.

Nayyar said DU cannot be expanded any more. It already has about one lakh students enrolled in regular courses and another 2 lakh in open school and non-collegiate courses. “We are looking for establishment of universities with a student strength of about 12,000 each,” he added. Pitroda said separate universities for specialised courses like say fashion designing or hotel management were required.

The chief minister said the government would consider setting up a mechanism to implement the recommendations.
