The General Administration wing of the city police processed and obtained sanctions from the government for purchase of 586 new vehicles at a cost of Rs 9.32 crore besides an array of latest weapons, including Glock pistols and sniper rifles.

The 586 purchased vehicles included bullet proof cars, multi purpose PCR vans, motorcycles, riot control vehicles, police tactical team vans, jail cans, ambulances, first responder vehicles and heavy vehicles. Of these, a senior police official said, 94 vehicles were against old vehicles while the remaining 492 were additional vehicles purchased to meet the new operational needs of policing, including the Commonwealth Games.

"Many of these are a new generation of vehicles for tactical teams like special tactical and rescue vans and anti riot vehicles for special law and order situations," the official said.

The list also includes 226 multi detectors, 20 minesweepers, 240 X-Ray Baggage Scanners and X-Ray Baggage Inspector Systems.
