It may not undo the trauma they have gone through but a new scheme of the Delhi government is likely to make their legal battles easier. For the first time in Delhi, the Sheila Dikshit government has decided to compensate victims of rape and acid attacks.

Government officials said a draft notification has been approved by Lt-Governor Tejinder Khanna and the scheme is expected to come into effect within 10 days. Under it, a rape victim will be given a maximum of Rs 3 lakh as compensation and a minimum of Rs 2 lakh within two months of the crime.
Acid attacks victims will also be given Rs 3 lakh if their faces are disfigured. Other victims of acid attacks will be given Rs 50,000.In a city where cases of rape increased from 507 in 2010 to 568 in 2011, the compensation is aimed at helping victims financially.
“Many victims spend a large amount of money fighting their cases in court or getting medical treatment. The compensation will at least try to help them monetarily,” a senior official said.
The scheme was expedited after the Supreme Court rapped the government for the delay in formulating a concrete plan to compensate rape victims. An allocation will be made in the state government’s annual budget for its implementation.
