Delhi's new Transport Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely on Wednesday asked his department to launch a special drive to check vehicular pollution, overspeeding and overloading by commercial vehicles, especially those coming into the city from the suburbs.

Lovely's directions came after he reviewed vehicular pollution with Transport Commissioner RK Verma and other senior officials of the transport department.
He said state of the art equipment would be used in the drive, an official said. "The minister also said that the transport department would not hesitate to impound any vehicles found violating the norms."
The minister told officials that commercial vehicle owners resort to overloading for short term commercial gains. This leads to increased emission of hazardous gases in the air.
"The rising emissions levels in the city are a cause of concern these days as the commercial vehicles coming from the NCR (National Capital Region) region generally do not adhere to emission control standards," he added.
