Demand rises but power supply remains abysmal

It was status quo on the power front in Delhi with the demand rising to a new record high on Monday and Delhiites braving horrible heat through hour-long power cuts.

The peak hour demand reached 5,454 MW on Monday, the highest ever for the national Capital even as various areas reeled under load-shedding due to low frequency and local faults. On a 41.8 degrees-hot day, residents of large parts in south, west and north Delhi faced disruptions for hours.

As Haryana and Uttar Pradesh overdrew from the grid than their sanctioned load, Delhi suffered low frequency. Power distribution companies carried out load-shedding in areas such as Kailash Colony, Greater Kailash I, Mehrauli, Rohini, Dwarka, Vikaspuri, Mayur Vihar, Ashok Nagar, among others.

City residents complained that power cuts started from Sunday night in south and west Delhi and lasted for several hours.

Meanwhile, Delhi cabinet on Monday okayed a subsidy of R1 per unit for consumers having a total consumption of 200 units.
