The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has blamed intermittent rains for the rise. "This is the season for vector-borne diseases but we are taking all the necessary action," a senior MCD official said.

On Saturday, Delhi reported 36 new cases, the highest in a day for this season.

The Delhi government has launched a 12-hour special helpline — (011)22307145 — which will remain operational from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

It has issued several advisories in various newspapers urging people not to panic along with stating symptoms and preventive measures for the disease.

With the number of cases rising in the city, MCD Commissioner K.S. Mehra had said that no civic body employee would get a weekly off till the monsoon is over.

Usually, high fever, for four-five days, is accompanied by severe headache, rashes and pain in the eyes, muscles and joints.

The most dangerous phase of the disease i s a drop in the platelet count, which begins after the fever subsides.
