Discoms to replace 700 oil-based transformers

Over the next one year, power distributor BSES will strengthen its electricity supply network by replacing 700 old, oil-based transformers with dry ones.

These transformers, bought for Rs 112 crore, will not emit noxious fumes and are less prone to tripping. They also cost 25% more than the ones they will replace, company officials said.

"We got the go-ahead from the power regulator for making this capital expenditure, which is very essential for the network," said Gopal Saxena, CEO of BSES Rajdhani, the Capital's biggest power discom.

While BSES Rajdhani will spend Rs 59 crore of the total cost, its sister concern, BSES Yamuna will spend Rs 53 crore.

Some of the residential and commercial buildings where the transformers will be replaced are in Kalkaji, IP Extension, Bhikaji Cama Place, Pushp Vihar, Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, Mayur Vihar Phases 1 and 2 and Vasundhara Enclave.

Most of the city's oil-based transformers are prone to frequent faults, tripping and heavy maintenance. The new transformers are largely maintenance free for the most part and hence run for longer years, the company said in a statement.

Replacement of transformers is a tedious task and involves snapping supply for long hours. BSES officials said they would schedule the replacement "keeping the convenience of the customers in mind", BSES Yamuna CEO Ramesh Narayanan said.
