DJB says its water is safe, potable

The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has raised questions on the North Delhi Municipal Corporation survey report that claimed that 50% of the drinking water supplied to areas under its jurisdiction was not fit for consumption.

The jal board claimed that the water being supplied by it was safe, potable and met norms set by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).

Referring to the civic body's report, which had claimed that more than 50% of the 258 samples collected from different areas were unfit for drinking, the water utility said it had not yet received a copy of the said report.

"We have not yet received a copy and hence cannot respond specifically," said Sanjam Chima, DJB spokesperson.

"In spite of repeated requests, joint sampling has not been done during supply hours. It is pertinent that samples be taken under scientific conditions and during supply hours to get authentic results," the spokesperson said.

Mahender Nagpal, Leader of the House, North Delhi Corporation, however, said that he stood by the report. "DJB is entering into an agreement (MOU) with a Singapore based company to purify water. This confirms that the water in its supply is contaminated."

DJB, meanwhile, insisted that it had a standard process for testing the quality of drinking water, which was tested for physico-chemical and bacteriological parameters.
