Recently, students of Delhi Public School (DPS), RK Puram, Pratham Alag and Rishabh Jain made a provisional discovery of the Main Belt Asteroid, 2012 PC6 on August 11.

The students had been enrolled into the All India Asteroid Search Campaign (AIASC) conducted by Science Popularisation Association of Communications (SPACE) and the International Astronomical Search Collaboration (IASC) in Arizona.

“The participating students download image sets of the sky with the help of high resolution telescopes from USA or Mexico and subsequently analyse them for any traces of Near Earth Objects (NEOs). They also made around 11 NEO observations, which are the third or fourth sightings of an N EO. They linked their provisional discovery of the asteroid calling it ‘DPS0001’. It’s a temporary name,” said the school’s spokesperson.

DAV school students had also spotted asteroids recently.
