Drunk and driving: Car crash kills 2 students

A heavily drunk boy, with three others onboard met with an accident on Sunday, with two of them losing their lives, reports Ravi Bajpai.

Do not drink and drive. A group of youngsters gave this terse message from the Delhi Police a go-by early on Sunday and paid for it dearly: two of them lost their lives.

A heavily drunk boy, with three others onboard, ploughed his Skoda Laura car onto a pavement at a high speed outside the National Gallery of Modern Art on the India Gate roundabout and rammed into a dustbin around 4.45 am, police said. Initial investigations revealed the four friends were returning from a late-night party at the Inter Continental hotel in Connaught Place. All of them were drunk, said Anand Mohan, DCP (New Delhi).

The car became airborne due to the impact and smashed into a tree. It then rolled over at least thrice before halting on the road, eyewitnesses said.

By then, 21-year-old Sneha Kapoor and 22-year-old Anirudh Rawat, who were in the rear seats, were dead. "The car had turned turtle. The girl's upper body was jutting out of the car window, lying in a pool of blood. The body of the boy sitting next to him was mangled," said Jai Bhagwan, an eyewitness. He said it was the only car on the stretch at that time and they were not racing. The car's safety airbag saved Satyajit Singh (19) and Gaurav Sabhiki (25), who were sitting in front seats. Police said it was not clear who was driving the car.
