DTC bus runs over CISF men, 1 killed

A 55-year-old sub-inspector with the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) died and three of his colleagues were injured - two of them critically - after a speeding AC low-floor Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) bus ran over them outside Nirman Bhawan on Friday morning. HT reports.

A 55-year-old sub-inspector with the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) died and three of his colleagues were injured - two of them critically - after a speeding AC low-floor Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) bus ran over them outside Nirman Bhawan on Friday morning.

The accident took place at 5.45 am when the CISF personnel were sitting on a pavement near a Delhi milk scheme (DMS) booth on the road opposite Nirman Bhawan. They were waiting for staff bus supposed to drop them home after night duty.

There was only one passenger -- a Delhi Police officer -- was on the bus apart from the driver and conductor. The AC low-floor bus on plying on route number 166, between Nizamuddin and Shalimar Bagh.

The errant driver, identified as Pawan Kumar, 30, probably fell asleep for a few seconds and lost control, said a police officer.

Kumar was beaten up by some onlookers, including CISF personnel, before being handed over to the police.

The deceased, identified as Lala Moham Khillar, hailed from Odisha's Kendrapara district. Khillar was posted for security at Jawahar Bhawan, which houses the Ministry of External Affairs.

"The bus hit the four CISF personnel. Khillar dragged for over 10 metres. The bus came to halt after hitting a tree on the pavement," said a senior police officer.The victims were rushed to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital where Khillar was pronounced dead. Das was discharged after first-aid and Mahanto and Durgad are undergoing treatment.

SBS Tyagi, DCP (New Delhi), said, "A case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, rash driving and causing hurt was registered against the driver. He has been arrested and his driving licence seized."

Ramakant Goswami, Delhi Transport Minister said, "We are conducting a probe into the accident. Whosoever is found guilty will be punished strictly."

Khillar's body was sent to his native village on board an Air India flight in the evening after post-mortem.
