DU’s 272 medical grads get degrees

The medical college, attached to east Delhi’s 1,000-bedded Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital, offers 150 undergraduate and 122 post-graduate seats in its 21 academic departments.

And the college is set to add super-specialty courses in its departments of cardiology, nephrology, endocrinology, etc. “It will benefit students who want to go for super-specialty DM and Mch courses though we are yet to decide on the number of seats,” said Dr OP Kalra, principal, UCMS.

The hospital will also be adding a maternity and child care centre as well as emergency and trauma blocks.

However, there is a section of doctors and medical students who feel that the number of medical seats in Delhi’s government colleges is not enough. More than two lakh students sit for class 12 examination in the medical stream every year while there are merely five government colleges in the city to cater to them. Together, they do not account for more than 800 seats.
