DU students to be split into two groups for new courses

Students joining Delhi University in the coming academic session may be split into two groups to study foundation courses. The newly introduced 11 foundation courses, especially in English and Hindi, posed problems for college administrations as all students have to necessarily study them in the first two years.

In a decision taken by the committee for admission and examination, students should be split into two groups. One group will study English and three foundation courses in the first semester, while the other group will study Hindi along with two foundation courses and one applied course in the first semester. The opposite of this will happen in the second semester.

The decision was done to make sure that the working of the new course is manageable.

“Had we made all students study the same subjects at the same time, we would have to hire a large number of Hindi and English teachers who would, in the second semester be sitting idle. Hence the decision to split the students into two groups,” said a member of the committee on condition of anonymity.

The decisions and suggestions of the admission committee will be scrutinized by the university administration and will be put in front of the academic council for approval.

Other suggestions of the committee include the decision to give admission based on class 12 marks and cut-off. Also, a student will be given admission according to the choice of the major subject.
