DU the heartbreaker

The sky-high first cut-offs in Delhi University cause a big low for young aspirants, who can’t hold back their heartbreak.

It’s that time of the year in Delhi University. Only, it’s much worse this year than ever. The first cut-offs are out — 100% for Comp Sc. Hons at Ram Lal Anand College, 99.25% for BCom Hons at Hindu, 98% for Bcom Hons at Hansraj — and young aspirants feel heartbroken. Their grief is pouring out on social media, even as experts promise there’s hope ahead. “I remember my time doing the rounds of DU, not making cutoffs. But I had bad marks. Today, 95% guys still feel the same dejection! Bizarre,” reads a tweet by TV personality Raghu Ram. “Revealed plot of Mission Impossible 5: Tom Cruise tries to clear DU admission cut off,” reads another post on Twitter, from the handle @aswinkon. Some are trying to ease the situation with humour. “100% for admission — 99% to try for jugaad, 98% to talk to watchman, 97% to stand outside the gate #IamsorryDU,” wrote @gurdeep1678, while @ShailSaa tweeted, “If Ram Kapoor wanted an admission in DU his cut off would be 200% coz he needs two seats!” DU professors, on their part, have different opinions. Jayani Adhyapak says, “I think colleges do that just to avoid over-flooding of students after the first cut-off.” Prof. Pramesh Ratnakar remarks sarcastically, “I think those who secured cent percent marks are better than the teachers who marked their papers! Maybe this means we need a new teaching system.”

Poor percentages but big scores in life

The bestselling author, who scored 85% in class 12, tweeted, “Since DU wants 100%, most of you failed to make the cut-off. Time to open up. Hashtag #IamsorryDU and state your classX or classXII marks.”

Kunal Kohli
The director has told us that he was “never academically inclined”. He had said, “I got only 42% because I was more into dramatics,” but he’s in the big league now.

Ambika Pillai
The beauty expert had dropped out of school. “Percentages should be the last thing to judge a child’s potential,” she says.

Mahesh Bhatt
The filmmaker, who got 37% in the boards, says, “There are people like me who are college dropouts but take the unusual route to become what we are.”
