DU to amend course, include English proficiency

Delhi University, bowing to pressure from students, has agreed to offer a course in English proficiency as an option for Hindi and Modern Indian Languages (MIL) from its next academic session.

Various bodies, comprising students from northeastern states, had been asking the university to change its syllabus and remove a clause that made the study of either Hindi or a MIL (which includes Bengali, Telugu, Assamese or Manipuri) as compulsory.

Most students from the northeastern states had raised an objection against this clause terming the imposition of Hindi on them as cultural chauvinism. They had also pointed out how finding adequate teachers for MIL subjects was very difficult. Most colleges, they said, did not teach subjects like Assamese or Manipuri. The agitating students have also filed a petition with the National Human Rights Commission.
