Dust storm, rain bring respite

A late Sunday afternoon dust storm, blowing at a speed of 62 km per hour, followed by a light rain brought down the temperature to 29 degrees Celsius. It also brought a huge respite to the Capital reeling under 42.6 degrees Celsius in the day.

However, soon after the storm and the light shower, it was again a bright sunny evening. The storm, which was experienced at around 3.30 p.m., also took down more than 20 trees in various areas.

According to the Met office, maximum temperature recorded on Sunday was 43 degrees Celsius (three degrees above normal), while the minimum was 28.1 degrees Celsius. Humidity was recorded between 59 degrees (maximum) and 23 degrees (minimum).

Indian Meteorogical Department director R.C. Vasishtha said the dust storm and thunderstorm was caused due to Western
Disturbances crossing Jammu and Kashmir, along with “induced cyclonic circulation developed in the lower layer atmosphere over northwest Rajasthan and neighbouring area.”

The weatherman has predicted similar thunderstorms and dust storms for Monday towards late afternoon, along with a partly cloudy sky. The maximum temperature, however, is likely to hover around 43 degrees Celsius.
