The Delhi police detained eight more persons on Tuesday for questioning in the Dwarka rape-cum-murder case, taking the total number of detainees to 23.

"We were earlier concentrating on questioning the victim's friends and family's acquaintances. Now, those whom the victim was friends with and accustomed to going out with without the family's knowledge are under the scanner," said a senior police officer.
The 17-year-old victim's body was recovered from a plot in Sector 14, Dwarka, on January 2. Police said she was strangulated with her jeans before her head was smashed with a stone.
"We have sufficiently questioned the prime suspects in the case and several leads have been developed. However, we are yet to ascertain either the number of assailants involved or whether the victim's refusal to consent to unnatural sex led to the crime," the officer said.
On Monday, police sources had said the questioning of prime suspects pointed to the fact that only a single assailant instead of a gang may have been behind the crime.
