That’s an idea.

And the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has written to the Haryana government proposing to convert this idea into a reality.

“We are considering to extend the airport express link line to Gurgaon. This link may also be done on a public private partnership (PPP) basis,” said E Sreedharan, the DMRC managing director.

The plan is to provide a high-speed metro link between Gurgaon and the Indira Gandhi International Airport by extending the already under-construction airport express link line in Delhi.

“We have prepared a drawing of a 14-kilometre extension of this line up to Rajeev Chowk in Gurgaon,” said DMRC spokesperson Anuj Dayal. “No feasibility study has been done yet and extension of this line will depend on approvals from the government.”

The under-construction airport express link line will connect New Delhi Railway Station with Dwarka Sector 21 metro station and will stop at Rajiv Chowk (Connaught Place), Dhaula Kuan and the airport.

Gurgaon has come up as one of the biggest industrial and business hubs with offices of a large number of Indian, foreign and multi-national conglomerates.

“A number of people travel from Gurgaon to the airport and vice versa every day. They would be benefited by the high-speed metro link,” said a senior DMRC official who was not authorised to speak to the media.

DMRC is also giving metro connectivity to Gurgaon with its Central Secretariat line, but travelling time on this section will be more than an hour. The 27.50-km Central Secretariat - Sushant Lok (Gurgaon) section will have 19 stations and will be ready by June 2010.

Senior DMRC officials said they may also provide a high-speed metro link to the upcoming international airport in Greater Noida from Delhi.
